escort cell [FBbt_00006049]

Somatic cell type with squamous morphology found in regions 1 and 2a of the germarium. These cells send out thin cytoplasmic processes which envelop cystoblasts and cysts for several days prior to follicle cell formation. Their extensions move posteriorly with developing cystoblasts, while the cell bodies are stable and do not cross the 2a/2b boundary in the germarium. More posteriorly located escort cells have a higher rate of apoptosis.
